about

"Music Of The Waves" was influenced by an interesting gathering; Antonio Carlos Jobim, Ennio Morricone, and Tim Buckley were all on my mind during the writing. I wanted the song to have the hook and melody of a pop song, along with a cinematic expansiveness evoking the Cornish landscape. Images of hedgerow, shore and moors - sights I see every day through the seasons are thrown up to catch the light, followed by a tumble of beautiful Cornish place names; Numphra, Polgigga, Morvah, Carn Euny, Zennor...
I hope it’s a song to dream to.

Both my band and upcoming album take the name Lethowsow, an old Cornish (Kernewek) word for the white water washed Seven Stones reef off Lands End meaning ‘the milky ones’. You’ll hear Greg Dyer on drums and Ben Kypreos on acoustic bass. Pop artist MAY sings guest vocals. May is my daughter, making this track with its moments of mother-daughter duet a special one for me.

My music traverses piano singer-song writing, folk, pop and experimental. It’s great to be starting to release the songs from Lethowsow, they tell intimate stories of human experience; motherhood, community, the daily rituals of life on the coast, and the transformative power of nature and landscape.

lyrics

Will you remember when the Gorse flowers yellow
When the brambles are looping and the west wind is mellow

Eels haunt the shallows and there’s green on the Willow
And we’re drunk on the air as our heads hit the pillow

As we dream through the night to a frost covered shore
Where the sun hasn’t shone since we kissed there before
Will you go
Will you go
Will you

Numphra, Polgigga, Morvah, Carn Euny
Zennor, Portheras, Gwynver, Porthgwarra

Weave me a world
Sound me a sound
The music of the waves is the only thing that really helps me
Sleep in the coffin bunk
Out on the open water
Gliding on a silver sea
Someone watching over me
Will you go
Will you go
Will you

Will you remember when the Gorse flowers yellow
When the brambles are looping and the west wind is mellow
Weave me a world, sound me a sound

The music of the waves is the only thing that really helps me sleep
The music of the waves is the only thing that really helps me sleep
The music of the waves is the only thing that really helps me sleep
